Good Beer Guide Surveying
In an effort for more transparency in the decision making in all areas of CAMRA's work, the process for proposing and judging entries for the Good Beer Guide will be posted here on our website.
The Good Beer Guide proofs are submitted to the North East Regional Director in March each year for the printed edition that come out the following September. Therefore from each March to the following March we intend to run a rolling review of all the pubs currently in the guide and nominations for new entries. The final decisions will be made at the final committee meeting prior to submission.
Reviewing and nominating pubs is open to ALL branch members. The more feedback we get, the more informed decisions the committee can make. The process will be managed by the branch's GBG Officer who is currently Nick James. Please send emails to GBG Officer.
The nominations for the 2026 edition have now been submitted. That information will remain undisclosed until the GBG 2026 launch day (tbc, typically September each year))
However, the process of surveying pubs in our region is an continuous process. Any surveys submitted from now will be put towards the 2027 edition.
Surveying pubs
Ideally, as a branch, we need to survey (review) each pub listed above to confirm it is still worthy of it's place in the GBG. We also need nominations of any pubs that aren't listed. Any branch member can submit a survey using this form D'ton GBG Survey Form or simply email it in.
Each survey needs to contain the
- date and time of the visit
- the beers on offer
- a recommendation to either Retain in the GBG, Remove from the GBG, or Submit to the GBG if not already in.
- a short justification for the recommendation above
For full transparency, all surveys will be recorded to this spreadsheet: Dton GBG 2026 Pub List
The surveys themselves will not directly effect GBG entries but will be used by the committee to influence the final admissions.
Examples:
Member: Ian Taylor
Pub: The Turbinia
Date\Time of visit: 28th September 2024, 3:00pm
Beer on offer: 1 x Real Ale (Sharps IPA)
Recommendation: Remove
Comments: The solitary beer on offer was not noteworthy enough to justify a place in the GBG.
Member: Paul Appleton
Pub: The Kirk
Date\Time of visit: 3rd November 2024 3:30pm
Beer on offer: 1 x Real Ale (Mithril)
Recommendation: Remove
Comments: Unwelcoming environment, extremely untidy, not up to the standard of a GBG pub.
"While the core purpose of the Guide is to seek out quality real ale, it also considers other things such as history, architecture, food, family and disabled facilities, gardens and special events (such as beer festivals),"
